Wildcats fall to Monroe City, remain winless

The Montgomery County football team is still seeking its first victory of the season after losing to the Monroe City Panthers 58-18 on Friday in a Week 2 game at Jim Blacklock Field.

The Wildcats dropped to 0-2 and have been outscored 84-24 in their first two games. They began their season last week with a 26-6 loss to Hermann at home.

Monroe City improved to 1-1 with the win over MCHS. The Panthers beat the Wildcats for the third straight year.

MCHS will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13, when it travels to North Callaway to take on the Thunderbirds in an Eastern Missouri Conference game. North Callaway improved to 2-0 after beating Macon 18-7 on Friday at home.

The Wildcats will play their next three games on the road. MCHS’ next home game will be on Oct. 4 against Mark Twain. The Wildcats wrap up their home season on Oct. 18 against Wright City.

Seniors Jacob Hogue and Trenton Birkner and sophomore Lafe McCurdy each scored a touchdown to lead the Wildcats.

Hogue caught a 74-yard touchdown pass from Adrian Combs with 4:14 left in the first quarter to cut Monroe City’s lead to 20-6. Birkner scored an 11-yard touchdown reception with 6:24 to go in the second and McCurdy scored a 45-yard touchdown catch with 12 seconds remaining in the third.

Quincy Mayfield scored three touchdowns, Marty Smyser had two TDs and Jayden Holland, Cole Hays and Dylan Ross each scored a touchdown for Monroe City, which led 58-12 at halftime.
