The Montgomery County Wildcats are Monroe City Softball Tournament champions again.

The Wildcats won the Monroe City tournament title for the second year in a row after finishing 3-0 in the eight-team tournament on Saturday, including a 6-2 win over Canton in the championship game. MCHS was the No. 1 seed in the event.

Last year, the Wildcats competed at the Monroe City tournament for the first time and won the championship after beating Brookfield 7-5 in the title game, making it the first time since 2018 MCHS captured a tournament title.

This year, MCHS cruised past the competition at the tournament, outscoring its opponents 28-8. It began tournament play with a 13-6 win over Hannibal in the first round, followed by a 9-0 victory over Brookfield in the semifinals and the win over Canton in the finals.

Sophomore Reese Hill shined at the plate and on the mound for the Wildcats at Monroe City, going 5-for-11 with a home run and two RBIs and picking up wins over Brookfield and Canton. She struck out 16 batters against Canton.

Also, senior Aliviah Fischer went 4-for-9 with six RBIs. She drove in five runs against Hannibal. Junior Dylan Topel also drove in six runs in the tournament, including four against Hannibal. Junior Skylar Bethmann and sophomores Anna Klekamp and Jillian Weekley each had four hits in the tournament.

The Wildcats remained undefeated after winning the Monroe City championship, improving their record to 5-0, which is their best start since 2015, when they won their first four games en route to a 17-7 record.

MCHS began its season on Sept. 3 with a 5-4 win over Hermann at Kiwanis Fields, followed by a 2-1 victory over Silex in nine innings on the road in its Eastern Missouri Conference opener.

The Wildcats are back in action at 5 p.m. on Tuesday with a home game against Mark Twain. They have a road game against Wright City on 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

MCHS wrap up its week with another tournament as it will participate in the Take The Lake Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Ballparks National, a sports complex at Macks Creek, which is nearby the Lake of the Ozarks. On Friday, the Wildcats will play Nevada at 3:15 p.m. and Kirkwood at 6:45 p.m. The next day, they will play St. Elizabeth at 10:45 a.m. and Northwest High School of Cedar Hill at 12:30 p.m.
