A Montgomery City man remains in jail after being arrested following the suspected overdose death of a 2-year-old boy last week.

Bryan Danter, 35, of the 800 block of Chestnut Street, was charged Sept. 4 with three felony charges for first-degree child endangerment, second-degree drug trafficking and drug possession.

The day before, the boy was found unresponsive. It is believed the boy may have overdosed on drugs found in the residence and may be the second time the boy has been in contact with drugs, according to a probable cause statement.

The official cause of the boy’s death is unknown pending the results of an autopsy.

Danter is currently being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail. He made his first court appearance on Sept. 5. He was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Sept. 10.

The boy was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 3 and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control was requested to assist with the investigation. A search warrant was obtained and law enforcement seized a plastic bag containing a substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine inside the home. A pill container also was seized that had capsules that tested positive for fentanyl.

During an interview with police, Danter told police he had taken the boy to the park earlier in the day and they returned to the apartment for lunch. He noticed the boy was more tired than normal and placed him in his bedroom for a nap. Danter later checked on the boy and he would not wake up, according to the probable cause statement.

Danter told police he administered Narcan on the boy in an attempt to wake him, according to the probable cause statement. When asked why he used Narcan, Danter said the boy had picked up a capsule and placed it in his mouth sometime in 2023. The boy was transported to the hospital where he was found to have fentanyl in his system, the probable cause statement shows.

Danter allegedly admitted to police that he knew drugs were in the residence and used two capsules of fentanyl after calling 911. He was unsure if the child ingested any drugs, but said it was possible, Danter told police.

According to online court records, Danter has a lengthy criminal history, including being charged earlier this year on drug charges stemming from traffic stops in Montgomery County and Hermann.
