The Montgomery County softball team captured another tournament championship on Oct. 5, winning the eight-team La Plata Tournament.
The Wildcats finished 3-0, including a 12-6 victory over South Shelby in the tournament finals. MCHS outscored its opponents 44-12 in the three games.
With the win over South Shelby, the Wildcats improved to 18-5 and matched last year’s win total. They also extended their winning streak to a season-high nine games. They were scheduled to play Community R-6 on Oct. 7 and Elsberry on Oct. 8. MCHS will play its final home game of the season on Oct. 10 against Owensville and will wrap up its regular season on Oct. 14 with a road game against Fatima. The Wildcats are hosting the Class 2, District 2 tournament.
A month ago, the Wildcats won their second straight Monroe City tournament championship, going 3-0, including a 6-2 win over Canton in the championship game.
MCHS began its La Plata tournament play with a 17-2 win over Atlanta in a first-round game. The 17 runs marked a season-high for the Wildcats, who scored in double digits 11 times this season.
Later in the day, MCHS cruised to a 15-4 win over Milan in the semifinals to advance to the championship game against second-seeded South Shelby, which lost to Trenton in last year’s tournament finals.
In the championship game, the Wildcats stormed to a 7-0 lead after four innings and never looked back.
Sophomore Jillian Weekley hit .666 (8 for 12) with five RBIs and six runs scored in the three games at La Plata. She went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored against South Shelby. She also had victories in the circle against Atlanta.
Sophomore Reese Hill batted .600 (6 for 10) with eight runs scored and six RBIs in the tournament. She went 3 for 3 with four runs scored and two RBIs against Milan. Hill picked up victories over Milan and South Shelby. She struck out 13 and gave up no earned runs against Milan and finished with 11 strikeouts and allowed three earned runs against South Shelby.
Senior Aliviah Fischer hit .500 (5 for 10) with seven runs scored and five RBIs, sophomore Sam Turner batted .500 (5 for 10) with four runs scored and five RBIs and sophomore Anna Klekamp was 5 for 8 (.625) with five runs scored and two RBIs.
