County set for 12th annual Rustoberfest

Posted

One of Montgomery County’s most popular events in October is coming back for another year on Saturday.

Rustoberfest returns for its 12th year at 8 a.m. at the Old Settlers Picnic Grounds in New Florence. The event will have a large display of cars, a swap meet, live music, a pin-up contest and food items, plus several music guests such as Laid Back Country Picker, Popskull Rebels, Jake Weber and StrawBilly.

Rustoberfest, which first began in 2012, is held every second weekend of October. It is sponsored by Metalflakes, which is a nonprofit organization that includes Mike Andrews, Aaron Gilbert and Daniel Kaminski.

Rustoberfest has grown tremendously from its first year, when it had over 70 cars.

“It’s a good time,” Andrews said.

Admission is $10 for patrons 13 and over and free for patrons 12 and under. The fee is $30 for show cars and campers and $50 for vendors.

“All the proceeds go to charity,” Andrews said. “We give a lot of money to VFWs and Shriner Hospitals. We do scholarships and local schools around here. We pretty well give it all back to the community.”

Rustoberfest organizers have promoted the event by putting up a display of an old van that is sitting on the corner of Picnic Road and Highway 19 in New Florence.

“It was actually Joe Topel’s,” Andrews said. “He’s a member of the Metalflakes. He donated the van. We did the work on it and made it look like a hot rod. Troy Reagan, who is part of our club, put an I-beam under it to make it look like he’s doing a wheelie.”

Laid Back Country Picker, a singer who is based in Kentucky, will perform at 7 p.m. in this year’s Rustoberfest. Weber, PopSkull Rebels, Bruiser Queen and the Lonesome Drifters will also perform during that time frame.

“He’s been over to Europe,” Andrews said of Laid Back Country Picker. “He’s really blown up on social media. He’s well known now.”

Rustoberfest will also have a pre-party on Friday that will include a performance from StrawBilly.
