Tigers roar to strong season on the track

The Wellsville-Middletown track team had plenty to celebrate in the 2024 season.

The Tigers had 43 first-place finishes from six athletes, broke five school records and had three athletes make trips to the awards podium at the Class 1 state meet.

Senior Bethany Slovensky and juniors Cooper Henderson and Gage Marshall were W-M’s all-state medalists, making it the second year in a row the Tigers had three athletes earning all-state medals. Slovensky finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles, Henderson came in sixth in the 110-meter hurdles and Marshall placed seventh in the high jump.

Slovensky, who plans to compete in track at State Fair Community College, finished with 23 first-place finishes, 15 of them were in the hurdle events. She set school records in the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. With her three medals at state, Slovensky wrapped up her high school track career with 10 all-state medals.

Senior Meagan Cripe had two victories in the shot put. She tossed a school-record throw 32-1.5 in her first-place finish at a Van-Far meet on April 15, breaking the old record of 30-11 that was set by Meredith Thomas in 1993.

Senior Jenelle Boeckleman broke her own school record in the javelin in her ninth-place finish at the Class 1, District 2 meet in New Haven on May 4, throwing an 83-7.

All three seniors competed with the track team all four years.

Henderson enjoyed his best season with the W-M track team, getting 11 first-place finishes – including district and sectional championships in the 110-meter hurdles – and earning his first all-state track medal.

Marshall earned all-state honors in the high jump for the second straight year. He had a pair of victories in the high jump this season, including one in the season-opening meet at Van-Far on March 18.

Junior Jonah Slovensky had three wins in the triple jump. He also competed at state in the event.

Freshman Elly Cash had a pair of wins in the 100-meter dash, including one at the sectional meet at South Callaway that qualified her to the state meet. She broke a school record in the event at the Class 1 state preliminaries, running 13.21 seconds.

The other members on the W-M boys team included Justin Beabout, Brennan Cash and Haskell Davis, sophomore Zackery Vogel and freshman Shane Joles.

The Tigers placed second at the district meet at New Haven, earning them their third straight district plaque. They won a district title last year and finished second the year before.

Junior Della Gosseen, sophomore Brooke Stroup and freshman Aubrey Harmon were the other athletes on the girls team.
