The Montgomery County track team batted .1000 at this year’s Class 3 state track meet in Jefferson City.

Five athletes represented the Wildcats at the two-day state meet at Adkins Stadium and all five of them left there with medals. Seniors Jacer Brower, Weston Marshall and El Reagan, junior Tyler Erwin and freshman Samantha Turner made trips to the awards podium for MCHS at the state meet, which was held May 17-18.

Erwin received two medals – a second-place finish in the long jump and a third-place effort in the triple jump. Marshall came in second in the javelin, Brower finished seventh in the 400, Reagan placed seventh in the pole vault and Turner was seventh in the shot put.

“It shows that we work for what we have and we deserve what we worked for,” Marshall said.

All five athletes have a combined total of 15 all-state medals. With his two medals this year, Erwin now has a total of six all-state medals. Reagan has four, Brower has three and Marshall and Turner each have a medal.

Erwin jumped 22 feet, 9 inches in the long jump and a 45-2.25 in the triple jump. He now has two all-state medals apiece in the long jump and triple jump. Erwin also competed in the high jump, but came short of a medal as he finished 13th.

Erwin qualified for finals in the long jump after clearing a 22-9 in his third attempt. He was in first place for most of the event until Bleine Bryant of Bowling Green took over the top spot by jumping 23-1.75 in his fifth attempt.

In the triple jump, Erwin finished with his personal-best jump. He jumped a 45-2.25 in his sixth and final attempt. Bryant and Brandon Moore of Central High School in Kansas City finished in the top two.

Erwin, who made his third state meet appearance, competed in all three jumping events at the state meet for the second year in row. He competed in the triple jump on May 17 and participated in the long and high jumps on the following day.

“I really enjoy it,” Erwin said. “It makes me feel a little good about myself. It makes me feel like I’m good at something. I plan to come back next year for the same jumps, maybe even a fourth event if I could find some other event I’d be good at.”

Marshall threw a personal-best 181 feet, 8 inches in the javelin on May 18. He came up seven inches short of winning the state title. Marshall took over first place after throwing a 181-8 in his sixth and final attempt. But three minutes later, Skyler Still of Kelly ended Marshall’s state title hopes by throwing a 182-3.

Marshall made his second state meet appearance. When he was a sophomore, he came up one place short from getting all-state honors in the javelin, finishing ninth.

Brower finished in 50.67 seconds in the 400 on May 18 to earn an all-state medal for the second year in a row. He placed fourth last year.

The senior, who earned an all-state medal in the 800-meter relay in his sophomore year, qualified for finals in the 400 by placing eighth overall and third in his heat with a 50.81 in the preliminaries on May 17.

“That was one of the fastest Class 3 races in a while,” Brower said. “The top eight were all under 51 (in preliminaries). In the finals, the top three were under 49. That’s a tough race.”

Reagan earned her fourth all-state medal in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet in the event on May 18. The senior finished in a tie for seventh with Herculaneum’s Eddyson Reeves, who is also a senior. Reagan placed third last year, first in her sophomore year and eighth in her freshman year.

“That’s really exciting,” Reagan said of getting all-state medals in the pole vault all four years. “Getting all-state in my freshman year really set me up for success. Winning in my sophomore year was cool. I don’t know if a lot of people have done it, especially in the pole vault. I guess I’m leaving my mark.”

Turner became the first MCHS freshman since Reagan and Malia Rodgers in 2021 to earn all-state honors in the girls division by throwing a season-best 35-6 in the shot put. Her previous best was a 34-7.5 in her second-place finish at sectionals on May 11 at Paris.
