Fischer powers her way to strong season at MoBap

Brooklynn Fischer found a new softball home this spring.

The Montgomery County graduate joined the Missouri Baptist Spartans and immediately became a valuable player when the season first started on Feb. 2. She was outstanding on the mound and at the plate, winning 15 games with a 1.43 earned run average and hitting .430 with eight home runs and 47 runs batted in.

The strong efforts helped Fischer earn a spot on two all-American teams, one from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the other from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She was named second-team all-American from the NFCA and third-team all-American from the NAIA.

“I was super excited,” Fischer said. “I was shocked. I didn’t think I was going to get it only because a lot of the girls who did get all-American were in the actual NAIA Tournament. We got to the opening round, which is still really exciting, but it wasn’t the big tournament. So I didn’t get all-American. It was pretty cool. It’s always been one of my goals to be all-American. I was kind of relieved in some way, but I was also proud of myself.”

Fischer earned several other awards that included an all-American Midwest Conference first-team award, an AMC Conference Pitcher of the Year award and an AMC Newcomer of the Year award.

Fischer transferred to MoBap after a year at Quincy University. The new school gave Fischer an opportunity to get more appearances at the plate. She finished with 151 at-bats with the Spartans, compared with just 20 while at Quincy last year.

“I love the school,” Fischer said. “I love all of the people. I think it was a really great decision all around. With softball, the team is great. All of the girls are so nice and supportive and helping. I think I got really lucky with MoBap.”

Fischer finished as MoBap’s leading hitter and was the only player on the team who hit over .400. She hit safely in her first four games of the season and was hitless only nine times. She had a three-homer game against Southwestern Christian on Feb. 8 at the NAIA Winter Invitational in Mesquite, Texas, which is outside of Dallas.

The New Florence resident credits MoBap head coach Ted Leigraf for her successful season at the plate.

“He really helped me out, especially with hitting,” Fischer said. “When I was in Quincy, they didn’t really put me in a batting lineup much. It was kind of a bummer. He gave me a chance. So I think that’s a big part of it. He really helped me out throughout the season. I give a lot of credit to him. I wouldn’t have gotten the awards and everything I got without his help.”

On the mound, Fischer was the Spartans’ leader in wins and ERA and finished with 137 strikeouts. She had a season-high 12 strikeouts against Central Baptist (Ark.) on April 6. Her longest outing of the season came on May 14, when she threw 9.2 innings in the 5-4 loss to Southeastern University at the NAIA Opening Round Tournament in Lawrenceville, Ga., which is outside of Atlanta.

Fischer helped the Spartans finish 33-14, their fourth consecutive winning season. Their season ended with the loss to Southeastern University at the NAIA Opening Round Tournament. Fischer, who is majoring in exercise science, said she enjoyed playing with her new school.

“From the get-go, they made me feel welcome,” Fischer said. “We all kind of supported each other throughout the season. Even when it’s not with softball, they really help out with school and your mental side of things. They really check on you and they really care about you. I think that was really cool. It made me feel a lot more comfortable at the beginning of the year.”
