Tigers look to finish the year strong

After a month, the Wellsville-Middletown track team is enjoying a strong season as it turned in plenty of first-place finishes and broke three school records.

Now, the Tigers are setting their sights on the final month of the year as they will compete in the Eastern Missouri Conference meet on April 25 at Montgomery County High School, the Class 1, District 2 meet on May 4 at New Haven, the Class 1, Sectional 1 meet on May 11 at South Callaway and the Class 1 state meet on May 17-18 at Jefferson City.

W-M has competed in seven meets – two of them were in Van-Far – and has 32 first-place finishes. Senior Bethany Slovensky leads the way with 14 first-place finishes, followed by junior Cooper Henderson with nine, junior Jonah Slovensky with three, senior Meagan Cripe and junior Gage Marshall with two each and freshman Elly Cash with one. The Tigers also got a victory from their boys’ 3,200-meter relay team of Marshall, Jonah Slovensky, Zachary Vogel and Shane Joles.

The Tigers had four victories in the Eugene Invitational on April 20, which was rescheduled from April 2. Bethany Slovensky won the girls’ long jump and triple jump, Jonah Slovensky placed first in the boys’ triple jump and Henderson came out on top in the 110-meter hurdles.

W-M also had four wins in the Louisiana Invitational on  April 23. Bethany Slovensky placed first in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles and Henderson came out on top in the 110-meter hurdles and high jump.

Bethany Slovensky has five wins in the 100-meter hurdles, four in the 300-meter hurdles, three in the triple jump and two in the long jump. The State Fair Community College-bound athlete broke her own school record jump of 10.32 meters in her second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles at the Centralia Open Meet on March 28.

Slovensky comes into this week’s EMO meet as the three-time defending conference champion in the 100-meter hurdles. Last year, she won that event and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles and long jump at the EMO meet in Wright City.

Henderson has four wins in the 110-meter hurdles, three in the high jump and two in the 300-meter hurdles.

Jonah Slovensky has all three of his wins in the triple jump. The junior also placed first in the event at the two Van-Far meets, the first one on March 18 and the other on April 15.

Cripe won the shot put at both Van-Far meets. In the second Van-Far meet on April 15, the senior threw a school record 32-1.5, breaking the old mark of 30-11 that was set by Meredith Thomas in 1993.

Marshall picked up both of his wins in the high jump. The junior won the event at the first Van-Far meet and at the South Callaway Invitational on April 11. He earned all-state honors in the high jump last year, placing eighth.

Cash won the 200-meter dash at the first Van-Far meet. The freshman has been a strong performer in the sprint events all season long as she has finished in the top six in the 100 and 200 in most of the meets.

Also this season, senior Jenelle Boeckelman broke her own school record in the javelin at the South Shelby Invitational on April 8, throwing 24.61 meters in her 16th-place finish.
